Festive Smoked Salmon Wreath with Dill and Cream Cheese

This Smoked Salmon Wreath makes a striking centrepiece for any festive table. Paired with a bright herb-and-yoghurt sauce, it’s an elegant, no-cook salad that’s quick to assemble. Light enough to serve as a starter before a richer main, it’s ideal for holiday entertaining and special gatherings throughout the year.

This recipe has become a holiday favourite in my family. I’ve made it for several years and it always receives rave reviews. It looks fancy but is so simple to put together. I make the sauce as written and also a dairy-free version when needed, and it’s always a hit.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe:

  • An edible wreath is an impressive starter with minimal effort. You can certainly make a smoked salmon platter by arranging the same ingredients more casually, but the wreath presentation instantly feels celebratory.
  • Arranging simple ingredients in a wreath gives your table a festive focal point. With a little care, this easy appetizer becomes a show-stopping centrepiece.
  • The ingredients complement each other beautifully and are easy to source.
  • The wreath is highly customisable; treat it as a guide for combining flavours and textures to suit your occasion.
  • This version is gluten-free and nut-free when served with suitable accompaniments.
  • Although perfect for the holidays, this salad works any time of year.
  • It’s a nutritious, low-carb option made from a variety of fresh, vibrant ingredients.

Serving note: The smoked salmon wreath pairs wonderfully with other festive wreath-style salads—use the idea to create contrasting platters of seasonal colour and flavour.

Ingredients and Substitutions:

See the recipe card below for exact quantities and the full method.

Ingredients in this recipe on a white marble background.
  • For the salad:
  • Cos/romaine lettuce – Baby cos or romaine is crisp and robust, making it a good base. Curly frisée also creates an attractive texture.
  • Sliced smoked salmon – Cold-smoked salmon is ready to serve, requires no cooking, and is easy to arrange. If you prefer, hot-smoked salmon can be flaked, or substitute smoked chicken or thin slices of rare roast beef.
  • Red onion – Use thinly sliced red onion for its mild sweetness and appealing colour when served raw.
  • Red radishes – Thinly sliced, they add crunch, colour, and a peppery bite that contrasts nicely with cucumber.
  • Lemon – Fresh lemon wedges bring brightness and acid that complements the salmon.
  • Baby cucumbers – Sweet, crunchy, and seed-light, they need no peeling; slice them lengthwise for the wreath.
  • Capers – Salty and tangy, capers are a classic partner for smoked salmon.
  • Dill – Fresh dill offers a mild anise flavour and adds visual appeal. If you dislike dill, swap for chopped chives, parsley, or a little lemon zest.
  • For the sauce:
  • Greek yoghurt – Provides tang and creaminess while keeping the sauce lighter.
  • Sour cream – Use full-fat if you prefer a richer dressing.
  • Fresh lemon juice – Always use fresh-squeezed for the best flavour.
  • Prepared horseradish – Gives a pleasant heat and traditional lift; it’s different from horseradish sauce.
  • Fresh dill – Finely chopped for the dressing.
  • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper – Add salt sparingly, as smoked salmon can already be quite salty. Freshly ground pepper has more flavour than pre-ground.

Variations:

Use this smoked salmon wreath as a flexible template. Add or swap in ingredients you enjoy—hard-boiled eggs, avocado slices, cherry tomatoes, or marinated artichoke hearts all work well.

Other options include:

Lettuce: substitute rocket/arugula, baby spinach, or curly frisée if you like.

Protein: use hot-smoked salmon in chunks, smoked chicken breast, or thin slices of roast beef as alternatives.

Herbs: replace dill with finely chopped chives, parsley, or extra lemon zest if preferred.

How to Make a Smoked Salmon Wreath:

Refer to the recipe card below for exact quantities and detailed steps.

Steps 1-2 of preparing this recipe - making the dressing and starting to assemble the wreath with the lettuce leaves on a plate.

1 – Make the sauce:
Combine all sauce ingredients in a small bowl, mix until smooth, then chill until needed. Place the sauce in a small bowl and set it in the centre of the wreath when serving.

2 – Arrange the lettuce:
Wash and dry the leaves, then separate them and arrange in a circular wreath shape on a large platter or board. Leave space in the centre for the sauce bowl. A 27 cm (10½”) platter works well for 4 people; use a larger board for more servings.

Steps 3-4 of preparing this recipe - adding the other ingredients to the wreath and garnishing with dill sprigs and lemon wedges.

3 – Add the remaining ingredients:
Lightly fold pieces of smoked salmon and lay them over the lettuce to create height and visual interest. Tuck in slices of cucumber, red onion, radish, capers and sprigs of dill in a balanced, attractive arrangement.

4 – Serve:
Place the chilled sauce bowl in the wreath’s centre and serve with lemon wedges. Offer thin slices of sourdough rye or gluten-free crackers so guests can help themselves.

Tips for Success, Storage and FAQs:

Can I prepare the Smoked Salmon Wreath ahead of time?

Yes. You can prepare the dressing a day ahead and keep it refrigerated. For the freshest presentation, arrange the salad wreath on the day you plan to serve it; if necessary, you can prepare components in advance and assemble just before guests arrive.

How should I store leftovers?

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The salad ingredients will lose some crispness, so consume within 24 hours. If the assembled wreath or salmon has been left at room temperature for two hours or more, discard the leftovers for food safety.

Top Tip:

When a salad relies on a few quality ingredients, freshness is key. Choose crisp lettuce, firm cucumbers and bright radishes, and buy the best smoked salmon you can find for the best results.
