I love planning over-the-top themed birthday parties for my boys, and this Doctor Who birthday party was one of our most fun celebrations yet.
We have done plenty of party themes over the years that work well for younger children or mixed ages, but this one was definitely designed with an older group in mind.
After all, the birthday boy was turning 14.
That did not stop me from making sure the Doctor Who party food, decorations, games, and cake all felt special for my favorite fan of The Doctor.
What is Doctor Who?
Doctor Who is a British science fiction television series about The Doctor, a time-traveling alien who explores the universe in the TARDIS.
The original series began in 1963, and the modern reboot started in 2005.
It is suspenseful, adventurous, funny, emotional, and full of memorable characters, creatures, and storylines that make it a great party theme for fans.
Doctor Who Party Decorations
There are plenty of simple and budget-friendly ways to make a Doctor Who birthday party look fantastic without spending a fortune.
Table Decor
Disposable tablecloths are one of the easiest ways to set the tone for a themed party. We used blue and white tablecloths to cover the food table and gift table, keeping the color scheme clean and inspired by the TARDIS.
I also like to use collectibles we already have at home as simple decorations for family parties. They add personality to the table and help the theme feel more authentic.
For this party, we displayed a Doctor Who Yahtzee set my kids already owned. The container is shaped like the TARDIS, which made it a perfect decoration for the party table.
We also set out several Doctor Who books, including guide books and a boxed collection of Time Lord fairy tales. These small details made the table feel layered and interesting without adding much extra work.
Room Decor
For the room decorations, we used a party pack with balloons, hanging decorations, and a happy birthday banner in colors that worked well with the Doctor Who theme.
To hang the balloons, garland tape worked perfectly and helped create a simple balloon display with very little effort.
We also hung a large banner-style tapestry showing the TARDIS spinning through space. I attached it to our china hutch, and it gave the room another strong Doctor Who backdrop that tied the decorations together.
Doctor Who Photo Background and Photo Booth Props
A photo area is always a fun addition to a birthday party, especially for older kids and teens. To create a Doctor Who photo background, we used TARDIS door covers in a doorway. You could also use them to cover regular doors and create the same effect.
Of course, a TARDIS backdrop needs a few props inspired by classic moments from fan-favorite episodes. The props we used included:
- A fez, because the Eleventh Doctor famously said that fezzes are cool.
- 3-D glasses as a tribute to the Tenth Doctor, who is our family favorite.
- Printable Doctor Who themed photo props. After printing them on high-quality photo paper, we cut them out and taped them to wooden skewers. I placed them in a mason jar in the center of the table so guests could grab them easily.
Doctor Who Party Food
Themed party food is one of the easiest ways to make a birthday celebration feel extra special. For this Doctor Who party, we served a mix of simple snacks, fun references from the show, and easy main dishes that worked well for a group.
Adipose Marshmallows
Adipose are adorable little creatures from the show, and they make a cute edible decoration for any Doctor Who themed birthday party.
To make these sweet little snacks, we used one large marshmallow for the body. Then we attached two mini marshmallows to the sides for arms and two more to the bottom for legs. White decorating icing worked well as the glue.
Once the bodies were assembled, we used a food-safe black marker to draw on simple eyes and a smile. They were easy to make, instantly recognizable to fans, and cute enough to double as table decor.
Jammie Dodgers and Jelly Beans
We served jelly beans in place of Jelly Babies and included Jammie Dodgers as another nod to The Doctor’s favorite snacks. Jammie Dodgers are British jam-filled shortbread cookies and make an easy addition to a Doctor Who party food table.
Fish Fingers and Custard
Fish fingers and custard are one of the most memorable food references from the modern series. The Doctor eats them with Amy Pond after his regeneration, making them a perfect idea for a Doctor Who birthday party.
Instead of serving actual fish fingers and custard, we made a sweet version using Twinkies with small bowls of vanilla pudding on the side. It was simple, kid-friendly, and much more appealing for a party table.
Main Course
For the main course, we kept things relaxed and easy with grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, and a simple macaroni salad.
Pizza would also be a great option if you want something even easier for a teen birthday party.
We rounded out the meal with a few favorite dips and deviled eggs for simple finger foods that guests could enjoy while hanging out and playing games.
Doctor Who Birthday Cake
No Doctor Who birthday party would be complete without a TARDIS cake, so that is exactly what we made.
To make the cake, we baked two 9×13-inch yellow cakes and let them cool completely.
Once the cakes were cool, we layered them on a foil-covered piece of cardboard and covered them with homemade buttercream that we tinted blue.
To create the TARDIS shape, we trimmed the cake carefully with a sharp knife.
Then we frosted the entire cake with the blue buttercream.
I used toothpicks to lightly trace the lines before decorating, including the lower window sections and the police box wording. Then I piped blue frosting for the main details and used decorating frosting in a piping bag to finish the police box sign.
For the upper windows, I used two squares of white chocolate. They were the right size and helped the cake look more like the TARDIS without requiring complicated decorating techniques.
To finish the display, we added a Dalek and a Cyberman Funko Pop on opposite sides of the cake. They made the cake table feel complete and turned the dessert into a fun Doctor Who centerpiece.
Doctor Who Party Games
Since the birthday boy was turning 14, we kept the games simple and age-appropriate. Instead of planning lots of structured activities, we had a few Doctor Who themed games available for guests to enjoy.
One of the games we set out was our Doctor Who Yahtzee set, which also worked as party decor because of its TARDIS design.
We also had Race to the TARDIS, a Doctor Who board game, ready for the kids to play during the party. Having themed games on hand gave everyone something fun to do without making the party feel too organized or childish.
Doctor Who Party Attire
The birthday boy always gets a custom themed shirt for his party, and this year was no exception.
He wore a “Save the Daleks” shirt, while Dad joined in with a Beatles-inspired Abbey Road style shirt featuring the TARDIS and several classic Doctor Who villains.
Themed shirts are an easy way to make the birthday child feel extra special and help family photos match the party theme.
